Cats make truly wonderful companions. Independent enough to give you a little bit more freedom than dogs, they still offer plenty of affection to their favorite humans. If you are thinking about adopting a cat, there are considerations to think about before bringing one into your home. An Age Range that Works for You
Do you have a lot of time and attention to devote to your new cat or are you excited about the feline independence? There is no doubt that kittens are adorable, but they do require much more interaction and socialization. They are also endlessly curious, and might find themselves in some troubling (and dangerous) situations without supervision. They are also incredibly small, which exponentially increases their cuteness factor, but makes them a little more susceptible to injuries. They will need to visit the vet a few times in their first year to get all the necessary wellness checks and vaccinations.
Adult cats, on the other hand, have already grown into their personalities. They can usually keep themselves busy, and tend to sleep much more than a rambunctious kitten. Fully-grown cats will often also know how to use the litter box. The decision really comes down to whether you want to work with a kitten on training and help shape his or her personality, or if you want to enjoy a cat that is already settled into who they’re going to be.
Grooming Requirements You Can Maintain
While all cats do a fair amount of self-grooming to care for their coats, there is a significant difference between the grooming needs of short-haired and long-haired cats. Cats with long hair are beautiful, but they will need to be brushed regularly to keep mats out of their luscious fur. They might also need regular trims so they can use the litter box without obstruction. They will also shed…a lot. Short-haired cats still need to be brushed (and they still shed), but not nearly as often as their long-haired companions.
A Personality that Fits in With Your Family
Whether you have a house full of kids, pets, or it’s just you, it’s important to find a cat with a personality that fits into your family life. Energetic cats often work well in homes with lots of activity (like kids or other pets that like to play). Older, calmer cats make ideal companions for people who live on their own—especially seniors. Talk to the shelter workers about your home and lifestyle and they will work with you to find a cat that will complete your family.
